Kershaw Park (in the city of Canandaigua)

FIG. 1 view of the Kershaw Park launch area on a crisp early autumn day
Kershaw Park is located at the north end of Canandaigua Lake in the city
of Canandaigua. The launch faces south.
Directions: From Rochester, take I490 E to Thruway, thruway
(I-90) east one
exit to exit 44 (toll is 20¢), and get on NY
Rt 332 South 9 miles. On NY Rt 332,
you enter the city of Canandaigua, and approach the lake. As Rt 332
ends, you
will continue straight under Rts 20/5, and bear left onto Lakeshore Drive.
Travel east on Lakeshore Drive, where Kershaw Park and the Lake appear on
your right. Go to the east end of Lakeshore drive, pass Muar Street, and
make
a right-hand turn into a parking lot at a sign for The Muar House Cafe.
Park
at the right or west end of this parking lot. Launch is at west end of
this parking lot.
Alternate Directions: Get on Rts 20/5 (Eastern Blvd) and head east
of Rt 332 in
Canandaigua. At traffic light at Muar Street, turn right so that you are
heading south
towards the lake. At Lakeshore drive, turn left and then right into
parking lot at sign
for the Muar House Cafe.
Best Wind Direction: S, but SE, SW, W and NW also work well
Amenities: picnic tables, grills, benches rest rooms when beach is open
Fees: None
Regulations: no alcohol, no glass bottles, no camping or fires, carry out all trash
Strategize: if the winds are W, NW or W, consider traveling the
3 miles to nearby
Deep Run Park for better exposure. Also, consider
traveling another 16 miles
and paying the $6 fee (seasonal) and proceed to the Seneca
Lake S.P. near Geneva.
Both have better NW exposure, and
SLSP has shallow water for a ways out,
and provides better waves to
jump on a southerly due to a funneling effect.
