Directions: From Gloucester Courthouse, leave
U.S. 17 by following
signs for VA Rt 14 East. VA Rt 14 East/South takes
you through the
village of Mathews. Upon reaching Baven (about 25 miles
from
Gloucester C.H.), you come to a T intersection. Turn left to remain
on Rt 14 (Rts 14 & 600 combined), then travel about 0.2 miles
and go straight to
remain on Rt 600 Lighthouse Road (Rt 14
turns right, leave Rt 14 behind here).
Travel 0.7 miles and turn
right to remain on Lighthouse Road. Travel
another 0.4 miles
to the end of the road at the observation deck. The
launch is
about 26 miles from Gloucester Court House.
Launch faces WSW into Mobjack Bay
Best Wind Directions: NW, W, SW, S, SE and maybe E
Fees: None
Regulations: None
Comments: Launch area has a mud bottom.
This launch is
frequented by kiters. May need to walk gear out several
hundred
feet to get to deeper water and to clear the island. Launch is
particularly good in summer when southerly thermals kick in.
Often in
early Spring, decoupling occurs denying winds at the surface.

FIG. 2 view near Baven about a mile from the launch where
one must leave Rt
14 behind and follow Rt 600 Lighthouse
Road (straight) to get to the launch

FIG. 3 view where one must turn right to remain on Lighthouse
Road 0.4 miles
from the launch--going straight here takes you
to Bavon Beach where you are not
allowed to go due to private
property
